Welcome to Project A!

Project A is a very early version of a minimalist 4X turn-based strategy game. The main goal of this version is to test whether players enjoy the incorporation of a heavy random element (rolling a d6 dice to determine the number of actions per turn) in a 4X game.

In Project A, you conquer a hex map through expansion, resource management, and tactical unit deployment. Your goal is to destroy the enemy’s castle. Each turn, a d6 dice is rolled, and you have a random number of actions (between 1 and 6) to execute, adding an element of unpredictability to your strategy.

The current version of the game is heavily influenced by Antiyoy.

Getting Started

First things first

You are the green player. The brown player is controlled by a bot.

Objective

  • Win Condition: Destroy the opponent’s Castle. (⚠️ Currently, there is a bug, and attacking the opponent’s Castle does nothing.)
  • Loss Condition: Your own Castle is destroyed.

Basic Concepts

  1. eXpand: Capture adjacent neutral or enemy-controlled hexagons to grow your territory.
  2. eXploit: Each hexagon under your control generates income automatically.
  3. eXterminate: Spend income to produce and upkeep military units to defend your territory, attack enemy units, and capture more hexagons.

Controls

Camera Controls

  • Move Camera: Hold the mouse wheel and move the mouse.
  • Zoom: Scroll the mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

Unit Selection and Actions

  • Select Unit: Click on any of your units to select it.
  • Move Unit: Click on an adjacent hex to move the selected unit.
  • Attack: Click on an adjacent hex occupied by an enemy unit or Castle to attack.
  • Produce Unit: Click on your Castle and then click the "Produce Unit" button to create a new unit. This costs 4 Gold.

Gameplay Mechanics

Income and Economy

  • Income: Each hexagon you control generates 1 Gold per turn.
  • Unit Production Cost: 4 Gold.
  • Unit Upkeep Cost: 2 Gold per unit per turn.

Turn Structure

  1. Start of Turn:
    • A d6 dice is rolled to determine the number of actions you can take this turn (between 1 and 6).
    • Income is calculated and added to your Gold reserve.
    • Upkeep costs are deducted from your Gold reserve.
  2. Action Phase:
    • Move or attack with your units.
    • Produce new units if you have enough Gold.
  3. End Turn: Click the "End Turn" button to finish your turn.

Feedback

We are particularly interested in your feedback on the random element introduced by the d6 dice roll each turn. Please share your thoughts on how this affects your gameplay experience and strategy, and do you like that idea at all.
